Atherton Community School

This remodeling of a 1967 school campus promotes investment in landscape against the prevailing views on capital spending in education projects. Stepping the central courtyard to connect the buildings with the landscape, the design also brings new daylight into the teaching spaces and higher environmental standards.

Great care was taken to improve the circulation in this building that had become complicated through incremental changes. Selective demolition of buildings and walls, opening up of windows and rooflights and a new colour-coding, brought a fresh appearance and improved navigation.

The project has been praised by the Department of Education’s Education Funding Agency (EFA) for an intelligent and creative approach.
